CDC Update
on Gardasil 21.10.2009. Gardasil approved for boys and young
men ages 9 to 26
CDC Update on
Gardasil
-
U.S.
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention’s Advisory Committee on
Immunization Practices supports the
permissive use of
Gardasil
for boys and young men ages 9 to 26.
-
Advisory Committee on Immunization
Practices also voted to recommend
funding for the use of
Gardasil
in males through the Vaccines for
Children program.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention’s (CDC’s) Advisory Committee on
Immunization Practices (ACIP) supports the
permissive use of Gardasil for boys and
young men ages 9 to 26, which means that
Gardasil may be given to males ages 9 to 26
to reduce the likelihood of acquiring
genital warts at the discretion of the
patient's health care provider. The ACIP
also voted to recommend that funding be
provided for the use of Gardasil in males
through the Vaccines for Children (VFC)
program. On Oct. 16, the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) approved Gardasil for
use in boys and men 9 through 26 years of
age for the prevention of genital warts
caused by HPV types 6 and 11, making
Gardasil the only HPV vaccine approved for
use in males. Gardasil is also the only HPV
vaccine that protects against HPV types 6
and 11 which cause approximately 90 percent
of all genital warts cases. “We are pleased
that the ACIP has provided VFC funding for
the use of Gardasil in males, which should
enable access to this important public
health advance,” said Dr. Mark Feinberg,
vice president of Policy, Public Health and
Medical Affairs, Merck Vaccines and
Infectious Diseases. “We remain committed to
helping to prevent HPV-related diseases in
both males and females.” For females, the
ACIP also voted to recommend vaccination
with either the bivalent or the quadrivalent
HPV vaccine for the prevention of HPV 16 and
-18 related cervical cancers, precancers and
dysplastic lesions, and recommended
vaccination with the quadrivalent HPV
vaccine, Gardasil, for the prevention of
cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancers,
precancers and dysplastic lesions due to HPV
types 16 or 18, and for prevention of
genital warts due to HPV types 6 or 11.
Gardasil is approved in the U.S. for use in
girls and young women 9 through 26 years of
age for the prevention of cervical, vulvar
and vaginal cancers caused by HPV types 16
and 18; genital warts caused by HPV types 6
and 11; and precancerous or dysplastic
lesions caused by HPV types 6, 11, 16 and
18. It is estimated that HPV types 16 and 18
account for 70 percent of cervical and
vaginal cancer cases and up to 50 percent of
vulvar cancer cases. Types 6 and 11 cause
approximately 90 percent of all genital
warts cases. Approximately 75 to 80 percent
of people acquire one or more types of HPV
at some point in their lives. Nearly 17,000
new cases of genital HPV infection, of any
type, occur each day in the U.S., in both
males and females. For most people, the
virus will go away on its own. But, for some
people who don't clear certain types of the
virus, HPV diseases can develop, and there
is no way to predict who will or won't clear
the virus. It is estimated that one million
people in the U.S. will develop genital
warts. Some resolve without treatment; but,
for those that require treatment, warts
recur in at least 25 percent of cases.
CDC Adds Gardasil to Vaccines for Children (VFC)
Program
During today's
meeting, the ACIP also voted to add Gardasil
to the CDC’s VFC program. Since 1994, the
VFC program has provided vaccines to
children through the age of 18 who are
Medicaid-eligible, uninsured, underinsured
and Native American. After the ACIP has made
a recommendation for the use of a given
vaccine, the Committee votes on whether the
vaccine should be included in the VFC
program. Eligible children may receive
recommended vaccines through VFC once the
CDC contracts for the purchase of the
vaccine have been completed.

Dear Colleagues
Now that the
Prevention Week is over, I am returning
to the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition (www.CervicalCancerPetition.eu).
You may remember that this is based on
the Lisbon Accord that states the
European Commission must act if
requested to do so by 1 million or more
European citizens. Although the Lisbon
Accord is not law, a petition with 1
million names still carries a lot of
moral weight and it is a very good tool
for getting cervical cancer prevention
into the media so that more people
become aware of the issue. As part of the
campaign, we have been circulating an
html email in a number of countries and
it seems to be working as Slovenia
collected 16,000 signatures in a few
days once the email was sent out by the
cervical screening programme. Attached
is the Croatian version of the email and
I would like to ask if you could send
this to all the people on your contact
lists? If you can do this, please open
the attached file, select all, copy it
and paste it into the email that you
will send out. This does not work very
well if you send the file as an
attachment because many people do not
open attachments. One last thing, when
you send this out, can you please
include Gill Souter (gill.souter@worthdigital.com).
Gill is the person who is coordinating
this campaign and it will help her with
monitoring the programme if she knows
when you have sent this out.If you have
any questions, please send me an email.
Kind regards
Philip

Britansko društo za koposkopiju i
cervikalnu patologiju sa sjedištem u Birminghamu osnovali
su 1972. godine, dva, tada mlada sveučilištna predavača,
Joseph A Jordan i Albert Singer. Do 1975. godine Društvo se
zvalo Britanska kolposkopska grupa, a nakon toga
BRITISH SOCIETY FOR COLPOSCOPY AND
CERVICAL PATHOLOGY (BSCCP).Kao rezultat
sistematsko dugogodišnjeg rada i iskustva od 1981. Društvo
se potvrdilo kao jedna od vodećih organizacija za
kolposkopiju i cervikalnu patologiju u svijetu. Broj članova
društva sa početnih 35 danas je prerastao u preko 2400. A
svakim danom ih je sve više. Također i kriteriji za
postajanje članom ovog društva su sve zahtjevniji i
sistematičniji.
11.12.2008. U
Birminghamu se održala napredna radionica za kolposkopiju
pod originalnim nazivom
BSCCP/EFC Advanced
Colposcopy Workshop for Consultants and Nurses Birmingham.
Radionici je na
osobni poziv prof. Jordana prisustvovao, predstojnik Klinike
za ženske bolesti i porodništvo KB „Sestre milosrdnice“ prof.
Grubišić Goran i Dražan Butorac, dr.med..
U izuzetno dobro
organiziranoj aktivnoj nastavi predstavljene su i dvije
knjige.
sagledaju svoje mjesto u novostima dijagnostike i liječenja
bolesti ženskog reproduktivnog sustava.
Prikazana je
knjiga u „European Guidelines for Management of Abnormal
Cytology and CIN“ (Evropske smjernice za postupanje kod
abnormalnosti citoloških nalaza i CIN-a, te knjiga naglašeno
za pacijentice, „HPV and Vaccines: Myths and Misconceptions“
(HPV i cijepivo: Mitovi i zbalude)
Renomirani
predavači dali su prikaz :
1.
Sistematskog nadzora cervikalnog raka
2.
Evropskih smjernica za postupanje sa citološkim
abnormalnostima i CIN-om
3.
Cervikalnog probira za dvadeset i prvo stoljeće
4.
HPV testiranja i cijepiva - najnovije spoznaje
5.
Poteškoća i posebnosti kolposkopije u slučajevima
infekcije HIV-om, menopauze i trudnoće.
6.
Postupnika kod praćenja žljezdanih abnormalosti i
graničnih slučajeva patologije grla vrata maternice
7.
Postupnika kod citoloških lezija niskog malignog
potencijala grla vrata maternice
8.
Novih mogućih tumorskih markere u budućnosti
9.
Brojnih pojedinačnih zanimljivih slučajeva
Sve je bilo
popraćeno izvrsnom tehničkom podrškom i aktivnim
učestvovanjem polaznika.
Na ovaj način
obogatili smo naše znanje, kako bi smo sa najnovijim
spoznajama bili na usluzi našim pacijenticama. Ujedno smo
svojim prisustvom produbili veze između dva nacionalna
kolposkopska društva, radi građenja daljnje suradnje i
edukacije naših članova.
